(rant)

I'd hate to say, but what kind of University is this? I got my umbrella stolen again! F***!

<rant>

I really got irritated about these kind of things. An umbrella is not expensive, but I expect people in the university would be well-mannered to respect the property of others. I used to think university was a safe place, I would place books on the table in canteen when I got out to order food, but this naive thinking got shattered when a medicine - you are correct, MEDICINE!! - student stole my book (well technically it is library's book) in Chung Chi Tang. How on hell can I place my trust on a doctor which stole others' book!? Surely he'd got the best results academically to get into Chung Chi College and the Faculty of Medicine, but go to hell with his morality. Personally I do not regard books (esp. those from library) would be a tempting target for thefts (books have low resale value after all), but I was (literally) shocked when that happened on me one year ago.

These happens to postgraduate students as well. I tried to be less racism here and *may be* this is a cultural difference - just go to *ANY* postgraduate hall and you will see all kinds of shocking things, and forget about the rumors about the manners of these "well-educated" people. Personally I don't care about what their room looks like (my room is untidy), but please f**king h*ll keep the public area clean. I think EMO really did a great job in keeping the hostel from deteriorating but ***please*** think twice before you put all kind of food stuff into the sink. I have seen all kind of stuff blocking the drainage in the pantry sink - grapes (that is last night), rice (yuck... how difficult and disgusting to clean!), noodles (WTF!?), and the worst of all - chicken ring bones. Hell the freaking rubbish bin is *JUST RIGHT NEXT* to the sink (within 2 meters). I really don't know what kind of **POSTGRADUATE** students we have in CUHK. Also don't forget about those [NO SPITTING] signs - they are here for a good reason - People DO spit in washing basin... Ugh... how disgusting. We are not in kindergarten man...

The morale of the story: Don't automatically assume university students (even the postgraduates) are "better" than average person you found in Mong Kok. So pathetic huh?

I hope to write more about the things I learnt when porting the program to OS X a bit later. I have also compiled a universal binary of the GLEW library, and I will post it (probably with the framework bundle) once I have more time in hand.

Porting NPVR to Mac OS X, Part I

I got this after a long struggle and head banging with sharing Makefile between OS X (gcc) and Windows (MSVC).
This thread helped me to compile universal binary of Boost 1.35.0. Probably I would see if they can be packed in a framework and upload it later.

Murex had been ported to Mac OS X in Universal Binary! (Screenshot later) As I have expected porting to OS X helped me to iron out a few bugs/glitches.

libmurex-glut.a: Mach-O universal binary with 2 architectures
libmurex-glut.a (for architecture ppc): current ar archive random library
libmurex-glut.a (for architecture i386): current ar archive random library
libmurex.a:      Mach-O universal binary with 2 architectures
libmurex.a (for architecture ppc): current ar archive
libmurex.a (for architecture i386): current ar archive

Finally I have begun to port the plugin system to OS X. The plugins would be in the dylib format and the dl*() functions can be used to load/unload them. The estimated time ahead to complete porting the plugin system is one afternoon.

The final milestone is to port the ShaderTuner plugin with the custom Win32 sliders to Carbon/Cocoa.

That's all for today and all of my energy had drained away.

Porting Murex to Mac OS X, Part I

Finally I have set out to port Murex (the name of my home-brew cross platform GUI library) to Mac OS X. I still want to stick with GNU make and therefore I have tried to modify the make file to make it work on OS X. Here is the results after a lot of hard work and head scratching.

Also it seems like compiling static library is possible but not-quite-supported in OS X. May be I would abandon the idea of having a static library.

Nice error, isn't it? Next milestone: compiles the required boost library (preferably in Universal Binary) on OS X.

After some struggling I have decided to drop my porting effort and go to EKS rehearsal. I was very happy today, except that Johnny and Kenneth didn't have dinner with us!

Eat my own dog food

I have finally set out to "revert" up some of my stupid C++ code written long ago, and I would show case two of my stupid-ness here.

#define SHARED_PTR boost::shared_ptr

This is real. I don't know what the hack I was thinking while writing this line of code. The whole header file is reproduced here in its entirety to celebrate its removal.

#ifndef _HANDLE_HPP
#define _HANDLE_HPP

#include "boost/shared_ptr.hpp"
#define SHARED_PTR boost::shared_ptr

#endif /* _HANDLE_HPP */

WTF!?

PS: Probably I was thinking that the file is for "easier" transition to std::shared_ptr once it C++0x is released, but I think everybody would think otherwise.

Favor forward declaration over #include

In short I have been convinced that I should use forward declaration when ever possible.

Cocoa Masochism

Is is official! A new form of masochism is found and will be included in the upcoming DSM-V.

After downloading the Nibless Leopard Cocoa application from this (very) smart guy I was disappointed to know that there is a file (or more accurately a directory) named "NiblessLeopard.xcodeproj" in the zip archive. In order to fulfill my masochism I have decided to take this further to remove the dependency on XCode, and after some struggling I am pleased to announce the release of these two files.

Makefile

MakeBundle

You would be able to "make" your first Nib-less + XCode-less Cocoa application after downloading NiblessLeopard.zip and these two files, together with some undocumented (who would think of writing documentation during hacking?) changes to the files.

This marks the beginning of my masochistic Objective-C/C++ and Cocoa voyage.

New Phone - N705iμ ^.^

I have got the phone from Sin Tat and here is the
official Gallery for N705iμ. A lot of its advanced features are not working but after some hassle I have got the following features working "correctly".

Phone :)

Address Book: iSync + correct sorting and Chinese "display name"

Ringtone: around 50 seconds using 8kHz mono PCM (.wav), or 25 seconds using 8kHz Stereo/16kHz Mono, etc.

IMHO I think this phone looks much better than iPhone. :P

Another Rainy Day in CUHK

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_6OpbCyKG4pI/SFaZt_NIcSI/AAAAAAAAABU/c2V98bfBR_E/s400/NEC_0010.JPG" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5212522634067603746" alt="University Avenue... ugh... I mainly dealt with my research in this year and here is the summary of my research progress.

My own research topic: 99.9% failure :(

EG08 - Rejected

Viz08 - Decided not to submit in last minute

TVCG - Pending

Oh I also got a bunch of new friends from EKSY, which is probably one of the best thing ever happened in this year.

I have also talked with a EE student which wants to pursue a degree in medicine after he graduates. I believe this would be an interesting course for me to take (and to meet with others with similar interests).

Also, it seems that Lap Chi's algorithm course (and also its web page, it is pretty difficult to find a pretty course home page in our department) is quite good. Hopefully it is good enough that it makes me interested in those theoretical stuff (and mathematics in general).

* * *

Yesterday night I have finished volume bounded proxy geometry for volume rendering, which takes much less time than I have expected (it took me one night only...). The resulting demo is pretty funny to play with. :D

* * *

I have attended a seminar on research today. Although it is mostly "standard" stuff such as "think outside the box", it does makes me think a little bit deeper about my own research topics and methods...

Installing Cell SDK 2.0 on Debian etch (x86)

Warning: Technical stuff ahead.

Yesterday I have installed IBM Cell SDK 2.0 on Debian etch RC1 (x86). I followed the steps outlined in Daniel's page loosely (Daniel's page is for installing SDK v1.1).

Download SDK v2.0

Download additional RPMs from BSC:

Use apt-get or aptitude to install the following packages:

Convert the RPMs to DEBs: <kbd>alien -k --to-deb *.rpm</kbd>

(Edited on 5 Jan 2007) You will need to run the following commands to copy the headers and libraries for libspe in order to compile SPE sample codes. (A ugly hack, but it works)

mount -o loop /opt/ibm/systemsim-cell/images/cell/sysroot_disk /mnt/cell-sdk-sysroot
mkdir -p /opt/ibm/cell-sdk/prototype/sysroot/usr/include
mkdir -p /opt/ibm/cell-sdk/prototype/sysroot/usr/lib
cp /mnt/cell-sdk-sysroot/usr/include/libspe.h /opt/ibm/cell-sdk/prototype/sysroot/usr/include
cp /mnt/cell-sdk-sysroot/usr/include/cbea_map.h /opt/ibm/cell-sdk/prototype/sysroot/usr/include
cp /mnt/cell-sdk-sysroot/usr/lib/libspe* /opt/ibm/cell-sdk/prototype/sysroot/usr/lib
umount /mnt/cell-sdk-sysroot

* * *

(Edited again on 5 Jan 2007) You will also need to install a newer version of GNU C Libary to run the compiler, you can install it from experimental using the following steps.

Add this line to
/etc/apt/sources.list
: <kbd>deb http://www.hk.debian.org/debian/ experimental main</kbd> (Please choose your own mirror)

apt-get update

apt-get -t experimental install libc6

I have been following the following cycle throughout the semester, and this cycle almost summarizes my whole semester.

Prepare the design of an assignment

Code the assignment

Write a specification for the assignment

Conduct tutorials

Marking the assignment

Check for/Investigate plagiarism cases

Back to the first step

Quite boring, huh? By the way, I am now marking assignment 6, and the code from the students contains all sorts of funny problems.

Hopefully I will write something about my birthday tomorrow.

Pitcher plant @ Grand Century Plaza

To my surprise I have found a pot of pitcher plant outside the Grand Century Plaza, Mong Kok. I am quite surprised to see it there as it is listed as an endangered species in CITES.
Finally I woke up at around 4pm and started to pack things up, then I discovered that I only has one bag to put my things. Obviously one bag is not enough and therefore I wen to Shatin at night to buy extra bags. Since today is the mother's day, all people are at home, and I have to go to Shatin alone.

After buying 4 plastic boxes and 1 bag, I went to McDonald's restaurant to have my breakfast on my own. From my memory it seems that I rarely eat on my own and I thought it would be a strange experience. For good or for bad the outcome is that I can concentrate on my thinking as I didn't need to converse with others: the upside is that I have a better utilization of the time, but the downside is that I started to depress because I could not be a mother myself...

I wanted to walk around and shop for a while after my dinner, but due to the bulky plastic boxes I cannot do so. As a result I went back to CUHK and continue to pack my things up.

Read: a boring day

* * *

Warning: Technical Stuff!

How to convert audio tracks of DVDs to MP3

Download OSEx

Select only the audio stream which you want to rip

Select Fmt | Elem. Streams

Select Seg | Chapter (if necessary)

Begin!

Download mAC3dec

Convert the audio tracks (*.ac3) to mp3 (or other desired formats)

Enjoy the music!

Unfortunately both topics for my Speaking task is very foreign for me: they are about fashion and radio, and I don't have too much to say about them. By the way, I will have to find a delegate to collect the results for me, and possibly to ask him/her to send my results to me via SMS. :P

I went to Logon with Alvin and his sister (Tiffany/Tissany) to buy his Mother's Day gift, which is a $200 cooking timer. I was also thinking about what should I buy at that time, I have two options: "shock absorber" for shoes or Teva/Croc's anti-slippery flip-flop, and I think I will decide and buy them tomorrow.

I have weared the White Musk Too perfume, Roxy tee-shirt, Teva flip flop and Soc Windbreaker to the occasion, but all others say I am very 'tui' @@, and I really wanted to buy a little coat and a shorts. Fortunately I have bought my graduation photo to the occasion so that I can ask others to sign on it as it is very difficult to gather so many y03 after the graduation dinner. The arrangement for the graduation dinner is just so-so: first there are too few instructions for us; second the food is definitely NOT okay (too few and not tasty enough); third the rundown is not smooth enough, there are way too much pauses in between the activities to destroy the high mood. On the other hand the activities is not too bad, I like the video very much (although it is a little bit biased for photo selection), the graduation cake, the souvenirs, and the photograph-removal "competition". At last but not least, I should thank for my gift from the lucky draw, which is an owl made with crystal with a graduation hat on it, thanks ar~~~~~~.

After the graduation dinner we have went to tsim sha tsui to have a chat. I have bought a Venti (new) Banana Mocha Frappuccino (special) by accident (I thought I was buying a Grande). 9-boys-girls formed a group and the rest of us formed another group. I belongs to the other group but we have not talked too much on "private" matters as there are other people around us. Probably because of this we left quite early (around 2:30), walked to Mong Kok and take the mini bus back to CUHK.

I have rediscovered a book called "How to read a book" during a discussion with JHKChan on the minibus, and surprisingly the Commercial Press also carries this title.

A song of a different kind

To you:

In Mong Kok there will have many puddles filled with black waters, but these are rare here in CUHK. However, there are a spectacular array of dead animals on the road, such as snails which have its shell cracked, little frongs which have been flattened and earthworm which have its long body split into two (or more, sometimes beyond recognition). The worst situation occurs outside the United College and the whole road is being filled with earthworms, both live and dead, some of them are almost 30cm long. I felt very sorry and disgusted when I saw the remains, as a result I took every measure not to step on them and it took almost twice the time to walk through the "mind field".

* * *

Today I woke up at 3pm, and I epilate after I bath afterwards. UNFORTUNATELY my roommate came in WHILE I am epilating my ARMPIT!!!! It was a really embrassing situation. Luckily it seems that he is very open for this kind of things...

After this unfortunate event I went to Coffee Corner to have tea with Kuenkuen and Pineapple, we have drafted a list of necessities for our trip. It was a really long one and it would take quite a bit of time for me to gather them.

I have dedicated today for me to work on the project on constraint processing, a good progress had been made but it is still too slow to finish the project by Friday. I have to work harder!!!

Finally we have found some evidence that Terry had been to France, and more importantly he has a sense of humor (read: a normal human being)!!
It seems that many people around me is unhappy for various reasons, and I really hope they will recover soon. Do smile because smiling can make you happier! :)

* * *

Today is a boring day as I was just working on essays which were already due a week before and the constraint processing course project proposal.

United College Photoday

At first, I want to apologize to John Chan because I have broken the necklace which he gave me on Shaw Photoday (><). I have talked with the shopkeeper today and she said the warranty period is only 14 days and we have just passed the warranty period. I plan to either ask for repairment or see this as an opportunity to "upgrade" the necklace but keeping the heart pendant (I really love it).

I am supposed to wake up early today, but it does not happen -- I wake up at almost 1:30pm! After I have arrived UC I just grabbed every body which I recognize in sight and request them to have a photo with me. As expected, both Alvin and Lo have got many friends from UC to take photos with them, and this bought up the question on why I do not have friends in Shaw.

After the photo day we went to take pictures with Elisa, which is my final year project supervisor, Jacky, Kuenkuen, Justin, KK and Edison. The most funny photo is being taken outside TYW Hall featuring us holding the "detachable" characters with Elisa (which doesn't hold any characters in order to stay "innocent").

Tonight we have our dinner in Shatin, as always, Alvin and Terry goes to funzone to play The House of the Dead 4. They have really tried their best and they have defeated the "C Eye Monster"!!! It is really an enjoyable to look at their performance and at the same time Alvin complains Terry's "poor accuracy". To my surprise I also find Catsix in fun zone.

I really wanted to finish a homework or two tonight, but needless to say I failed to do so.

Tomorrow Kuenkuen and me will go to Quarrybay to have the final contest for the Microsoft Server Championship. I really hope we will be the champion! I know that I have not contributed much to our team and I am perfectly okay even if Kuenkuen takes all the prizes. I believe I should only take what I deserve to take.

Finally, I want to say that although knowing my mistakes will make me unhappy for a while, I believe it will deepen friendship in long term and I really want to avoid the same mistakes in the future. Therefore don't hesitate to point out my mistakes!

By the way, I am the first to upload photos for the UC photoday.

* * *

The tee which I wear on CC and UC photoday. I really LOVE it!!!!!!

I am really fed up with those who think they are the smartest in the world and look down upon others who know less than you do in a particular area. When I hear your voice, what I would do is to sit back and laugh at your mistakes and ignorance, just like how you treat others.

The only thing I want to tell you is: The dumbest people in the world are those who think they are the smartest.

As a result, I have ample amount of time to import my photographs for Shaw College Photo Day to iPhoto and upload the relevant photographs to caelum. As a personal reminder for me, I still have not sent the photographs to those whom I have taken the photo with.

Tonight was the farewell dinner for my "mother" in the planner team and it is being held in Le Manege a club. After arrival I have discovered that it is the same venue as the one which used to host the CDEF of Crossia. It is a strange place: at first it has many uncommon decorations, but gradually I learned to like it because of the relaxing environment, the friendliness of the owner and, more importantly, the availablity of girls' costume and dresses (and I wished I live there). One memorable event about the girls' dresses is that when we arrived the Tony immediately asked if I want to try out one of the dress! At that time I have declined his "offer", but now in retrospect I wished that I should have told him yes.

Before the dinner I worried a lot about how the situation would be like as I have not done anything for the company since late-January, after the arrival this thinking is so strong that I begin to worry about my whether I deserve to be treated by the company. Luckily my very good colleague Kalok have tried to comfort me continously, and I am really grateful for it.

After the dinner we have played Jenga and UNO. The Jenga game is the best I have played because the final height of the stack almost doubles the original! Taking part in the Jenga game makes me think that I really dislike the feeling of the anxiety a competition. As a result, I have not participated the UNO game much and I was just teaching Kalok to play. My dislike of game drives me to have a (kind of) in-depth talk with the owner of the club because I really enjoy talking with people in different career and status.

After leaving the club we have decided to go to a pub in Lan Kwai Fong. I am a bit reluctant at first as I do not like the taste (but I like the smell!) of alcohol. After some struggling and with the recommendation of my "mother" I have decided to go with a Passion Fruit drink. The story does not ends here, my curiousity have made me to try all others' drinks, with the sole exception of Carlsberg, they are half cup of Bailey's (Wine + Coffee), some Shiraz (Red wine) and a bit of Tetley's (Beer). Together with the Ice on Fire (burning wine poured onto icecream before serving), I have consumed quite a bit of alcohol tonight. Luckily it seems that I am still okay , does not get drunk and does not have any discomforts. Before I leave I told David that I have signed an NDA with Crossark, to my surprise, instead of worrying about it he asked me what the consequences are!

Finally I have decided to study for my midterm at 2:30am!

* * *

I have a new personal record for overdue fine: a whopping $12 (and still counting)!

Dreams do come true... (eventually)

Some people complained that I haven't updated my blog for a long time, and I so do I...

* * *

Today I am occupied by the assignment on LZW compression (almost) completely. I have really underestimated the time which I need to do the homework, my original plan is to finish it on Sunday (haha), but I can barely finish it by yesterday. Luckily I can still learn something out of it: finally I really know why there is a difference between 7-bit safety and 8-bit safety (the particular case in my assignment is that widening extended ascii code from char to int will make it negative), and also I have implemented closed hashing for the first time in my life! Unfortunately I still have 4 homeworks (a reading list for term paper, 2 reflection essays and a take home midterm) which I target to clear in this week; plus a make up midterm on Thursday. Needless to say, my commitment to my company is an astonishing zero, I really don't know what should I say tomorrow when I have dinner with them.

After reading the blog entry by kuenkuen, I think I am in debt to those who have gave me gift and had taken photographs with me on Shaw Photo Day. I will take a photo for my gifts (the one similar to kuenkuen), upload photographs and send the photographs to others ASAP.

The strange thing is that I can still squeeze some time to buy a book on mushroom (Title: Hong Kong Mushrooms) published by the CUHK press, although I really don't know whether I will read or not.

Oh... just forgotten to mention that I am officially into social bookmarking today because of kuenkuen's recommendation!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://snowbig.blogspot.com/2006/03/dreams-do-come-true-eventually.html' title='Dreams do come true...
This is my first time (and hope that this is not the last time) that I have received flowers, and I really think it looks great!!
